Today (4/17/2025), Hillside Public Schools and @scholastic hosted their 2025 R.E.A.L. Read Festival! Hundreds of Hillside Public Schools students in grades 4 - 6 from our three elementary schools (Deanna G. Taylor Academy, Hurden Looker Elementary School, and Ola Edwards Community School) filled Woodfield Stadium for a fun-filled day with interactive literacy activities. This event culminated in the celebration of the partnership between Hillside Public Schools and Scholastic, specifically the Scholastic R.E.A.L. (Read, Excel, Achieve, Lead) Mentorship Program! The Scholastic R.E.A.L. Mentorship Program is designed to support families and community members in mentoring students through monthly interactive read-alouds, promote academic and social growth, and make a lasting impact on students’ lives! On Wednesday, March 19th, 2025, Ms. Crisanaz's science classes at Hurden-Looker Elementary School completed virtual labs with Students2Science (@students_2_science)! The students completed a lab called "Candy Color Wheel" where they used M&M's to identify the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors that make up a package of candy, using chromatography paper to separate colors! Last week in Ms. Petroccia's 5th-grade class at Hurden Looker Elementary School, students worked with their class pet, Digit (@digitnoodle) during science investigations! Students brought Digit along as they did the black box investigation; where students had to figure out what the inside of a black box looks like without opening it, and the Spaghetti Engineering Virtual lab (Vlab) where students tested how much spaghetti could hold a certain amount of weight, to resemble how bridges are made!
