Hillside High School's Student Council (@hillsidestuco), under the guidance of advisor Noreen Deutsch, has been awarded the National Gold Council of Excellence Award (for a second year, consecutively) by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC) @natstuco; recognizing its students' exceptional leadership, service, and community engagement! ! Hillside High School's student council stood out among thousands nationwide for their innovative approach to community, school culture, and education. They employ the help of the Union County Board of Elections to create a meaningful voting experience for the students of Hillside High School as they elect their Student Council Officers. This is a unique method of engaging students in civics. A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National [Gold] Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community! Today (4/7/2025), Mr. Skelton was very proud to welcome Hillside High School Class of 2012 graduate and Orthopedic Surgery Resident, Dr. Jomar Ayree, to speak with Mr. Skelton's Principles of Biomedical Science class. Dr. Ayree is currently working at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and will be at UCLA Medical Center in the fall! Dr. Ayree spoke with students about the journey to medicine and the many challenges he faced, as well as the accomplishments he has had as a Hillside student through medical school and beyond! The second annual Autism Awareness and Acceptance Family Fun Day took place on Saturday, April 5th, 2025! This event was a massive success, and the turnout was amazing! There was a petting zoo, bouncy houses, face painting, broritos (@broritosoft), a scream truck (@streamtruck), a bubble show, and more! The first "Brothers Bonding with Books And Basketball" session was a huge success! On March 29th, 2025, the initial session of "Brothers Bonding with Books and Basketball" occurred at Hillside High School. Brothers Bonding with Books & Basketball is a fun new initiative established by the Office of the Superintendent, aimed at connecting students with adult mentors from the community! Students in attendance had a blast playing various basketball games and participating in activities that also connected with reading and literacy! Thank you, Superintendent Glover, Supervisor Ms. Simon, Principal Woolard, Director Mr. McNeil, Ms. Harris, Hillside Public Schools' staff, students, and the Hillside Board of Education! On Saturday, March 1st, 2025, the Hillside High School Academic Decathlon team competed in the State Competition! The team came in 8th place in the State of New Jersey and scored over 30,000 points for the first time in the school's career! The top scorers for the team were Emmanuella Oluyomi, Salimata Sy, and Pranay Talati. In addition, Pranay received a Gold medal in Art and Music; a Silver medal in Economics; Bronze medals in Language and Literature, Science, and Interview; and an Honorable Mention in Social Science! Jeremy Laryea was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Awards were given at the annual ceremony on Monday, March 10th, 2025, at the Brownstone in Paterson, New Jersey. Coach Corritore and Coach Mandy would like to thank current and retired staff for volunteering at the competition and the Hillside High School administration for their support this school year.
